Get to Know the Tourism Staff: Natasha

As we continue in our weekly series of getting to know the Tourism Nanaimo staff, we now get to meet the lovely Natasha. Have a look at what she likes and loves about Nanaimo:

IMG_4430.JPG

In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret?

If I told you Nanaimo’s best kept secret, it wouldn’t be a secret anymore 😉 I used to think that Ammonite Falls was one of Nanaimo’s best kept secrets, but now it is on our Nanaimo and Region Map so I don’t think it’s much of a secret anymore. Now I would maybe say the Nanaimo River, which has several quite spots to set up for a day of fun in the sun, swimming, snorkeling and enjoying a nice picnic. Plus it is a great place for the pups to play too!

What’s one place/event/activity in Nanaimo that you have not yet participated in but would love to one day?

Something I would love to do here in Nanaimo, but have not yet had the chance to do is to go diving. I have heard that Nanaimo has some of the Island’s best Dive Sites and I am eager to explore. I have only ever dived in tropical waters so diving in the Pacific Ocean will be a bit different and I imagine a lot colder.

If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see?

If I only had one day in Nanaimo I would want to hike up to the top of Mount Benson. Although this hike might not be suitable for beginner hikers, but once you reach the summit the views are absolutely amazing, and it would only be a half day trip so I could go tour some of the breweries or wineries in the area depending on my taste bud’s mood as a little self-reward for making it up to the top 🙂

What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo?

I think the most interesting thing I have learned since starting to working for Tourism Nanaimo is all the history that surrounds Nanaimo. I never knew exactly old it actually is, or that it is one of BC’s oldest cities. The Nanaimo Museum has a few great exhibits, not to mention one of our Tourism offices is located in the historic Bastion in downtown Nanaimo.

Summer museum activities

Lots of great exhibits at the Nanaimo Museum!

Get to Know the Tourism Staff: Meshal

As we continue in our weekly series of getting to know the Tourism Nanaimo staff, we meet Meshal. Coming to us as a volunteer, you can typically find him at events and stationed in the Bastion. Here’s what he had to say about himself:

Meshal Photo.jpg

In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret?

In my opinion, Nanaimo is full of secret places; however, Westwood Lake is the best secret. Westwood Lake is a very unique and special lake. The first time I heard about it, I thought it was just a lake where people could go to practice water sports or hiking at most, but Westwood Lake is more than that. Westwood Lake Park is owned and managed by the City of Nanaimo. It has a 5.5 kilometre hiking trail all around it, and people can bring their own boats as long as they are non-powered or have electric motors. There is also a private campground near the lake for out-of-town visitors, with full and partial RV service, tenting, cabins, boat rental, a social place for playing indoor games and the Snack Shack Café and Shop.  Many people go to Westwood Lake for hiking, fishing, camping, picnicking, playing in the playground and on the beach, and sun tanning.

What’s one place/event/activity in Nanaimo that you have not yet participated in but would love to one day?

A Flightseeing tour with Sunshine Coast Air or Harbour Air is one thing I really want to experience. I really want to see Nanaimo’s local lakes and Mount Benson from the sky.

If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see?

The waterfront is the best for a one day trip because it is not only located in the heart of downtown Nanaimo, but it also contains many places that are very interesting, such as the Nanaimo Bastion, the farmers’ market, and two beautiful islands that visitors can get to easily and at low prices: Newcastle and  Protection Islands.

What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo?

That Nanaimo has more places and activities than I thought, or have visited!

Get to Know the Tourism Staff: Evangeline

Let the fun continue! Today on the #ExploreNanaimo BLOG, we meet Evangeline. You’ll find Evangeline working hard in the Bastion or up at Northfield, or possibly even manning one of our booths at a local event. Stop her and say hi next time you see her!

In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret?

I believe Nanaimo’s best kept secrets are part of the Trans Canada Trail, the Haslam Creek Suspension Bridge & the Abyss. They are well known to some and unknown to others. When the bridges are built to connect the trail it’s sure to be a favorite trail for many!

What’s one place/event/activity in Nanaimo that you have not yet participated in but would love to one day?

One thing on my ‘To-Do’ list is to join a Dragonboat team for the Annual Dragonboat Festival here in Nanaimo. I have recently returned to school where I unexpectedly discovered a new love for the water. I have had a few amazing opportunities and obtained some certs for kayaking, canoeing & SUP along the way!! Being a coastal gal, on the water is where I love to be!!

Finding my happy place on the water

If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see?

That’s an easy one.. I’d definitely recommend one of our many parks or trails depending on the visitors interests; For the ocean views Jack Point Park, Piper’s Lagoon or Neck Point, for the freshwater views Colliery Dam Park, Westwood Lake or Buttertubs Marsh. Two of our favorite trails to do as a family are Neck Point Park, as it has the gnome homes(one even has a “Give a little ~ Take a little” sign for kids to trade little toys and trinkets) & the Cable Bay Trail as it is also known as the dinosaur trail (all plastic dinosaurs of course, for display only, please leave for the next little explorers 😉 ). It’s sooo hard just to pick one, all are amazing & are one of the main reasons of why we relocated to this beautiful city!

What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo?

As many of my answers there’s no way to name just one.. Every day brings new surprises!! Whether it’s a new hike, a new family activity, a new swimming hole, or a new destination, this job reminds me every day of why we choose Nanaimo to be our family ‘home away from home’.

Get to Know the Tourism Staff: Morgane

Hello again readers! We are continuing our theme of getting to know the tourism staff on our Saturday posts, and are thrilled to introduce you to Morgane. She is one of our friendly and talented Visitor Information Counsellors, and is an asset to our team. Have a read and get to know her yourself…

In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret?

Most people who visit Nanaimo have heard about Mount Benson but they have not heard about Benson Creek Falls Regional Park, or Ammonite Falls which is one of the three significant waterfalls in Benson Creek. This regional park is located on the western slopes of Mount Benson and includes 22 hectares of forested land as well as 2 beautiful waterfalls. The waterfalls are created by Benson and Flynnfalls Creek, surrounded by a heavily wooded area. The trails in the area can be hard to man-oeuvre but are well worth the hike.

What’s one place/event/activity in Nanaimo that you have not yet participated in but would love to one day?

I had the opportunity to work at the Silly Boat Regatta the weekend of July 17th and decided then that I would love to enter the competition. So much imagination went into building the boats and the teams were having fun while raising money for a great cause! Hopefully, my team’s boat won’t be a complete disaster but then again there is a prize for the first boat to sink!

If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see?

This is a tough one! I love so many things about Nanaimo…..however, having just moved here from a landlocked area, I would have to say that my favourite thing to do is to stroll along the harbour and be near the ocean. Also, one of the best ways to enjoy the view is to sit at the Dinghy Dock and have a cold pint and fish and chips, while listening to some tunes.

What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo?

The one thing that has impressed me the most is the numerous local artisans that are in the region. I did not realize how many fabulous local artists there are and how talented they are. I am not ashamed to admit that I have splurged on a few very west coast pieces of jewellery since being here. I would also recommend The Cedar Yellow Point Artisan Trail as it features a variety of artists as well as local produce and dining options.

Get to Know the Tourism Staff: Dino

Happy Saturday, readers! We are throwing it back to the good old days (in 2015 LOL), where we introduced you to our staff team members here at Tourism Nanaimo. Up first in our series is Dino Tsembelis, our Visitor Services Specialist at Tourism Nanaimo. Dino is filling in for Amanda while she’s away on Maternity Leave, and we are so lucky to have him! We asked Dino some questions about Nanaimo and here’s his answers:

In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret?

In my opinion, the Port Theatre is Nanaimo’s best kept secret.  Many local arts organizations present at the Port Theatre with incredible local talent and/or complement them with fantastic guest artists.

What’s one place/event/activity in Nanaimo that you have not yet participated in but would love to one day?

I have yet to talk the plunge and go snorkeling or scuba diving in Nanaimo.  I would love to call upon one of the local dive outfitters, i.e. Sundown Diving and go snorkelling with the seals.

If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see?

The one “must see” attraction in Nanaimo is going downtown to the waterfront walkway.  I’d recommend walking along the walkway over to Maffeo Sutton Park and returning to Downtown Nanaimo to check out the shops, restaurants and cafes. Since downtown is part of the Nanaimo Bar Trail, I’d recommend stopping in and trying one from one of the many participating establishments in Downtown Nanaimo or Old City Quarter.

What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo?

Two surprising things I’ve learned about Nanaimo are that Nanaimo is British Columbia’s third oldest city and that construction of Nanaimo’s coveted Bastion Building began in 1853.

Whale Watching on Vancouver Island

Epic Day on the Water Whale Watching

Wow! Today is definitely one for the books, where do I even begin… I guess I’ll start at the beginning, sweating buckets in my giant red PFD full body suit as I listen to Simon from Ocean EcoVentures give his safety talk before we embark on what turned out to be an epic afternoon, to say the least.  There is no way to fully describe this experience in its entirety;  it is really something that needs to be experienced first-hand.  Our Captain Simon was super knowledgeable about everything we saw travelling towards the meeting point of the Strait of Georgia and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which is where the real magic happened today.

n2.JPG

Hey it’s us! Kathleen, Dawn and I getting ready for the tour

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves quite yet. There was lots to see on the way to the Orcas meeting (or should I say feeding) place for the day. By this time I was glad I had on that red suit because it was keeping me nice and warm, the wind was definitely getting a little chilly as we zipped down the coast.  I watched as all the houses that dotted the coast quickly passed us by, I was totally daydreaming before I was brought back into reality as we came to a slow stop.

Simon pointed out a group of seals sunbathing on the rocks and a few that were still searching for their lunch. These seals choose to make Spieden Island their home for the day, an island like none I have ever seen before. The west facing side of the island was completely bare while the east facing side of the island was covered in lush forest. Simon explained that it has been like that since the last Ice Age. Crazy, right?! But before we were about to pull away from the island we spotted a bald eagle, so we had to stay and watch for a minute. My dad would tell me growing up that bald eagles would always bring good luck.

n3.JPG

As we continued our journey in search of Orcas we came across a group of Sea Lions, boy are those guys big!! We quickly watched as they tried to get up massive bodies onto the rocks so they could spend the afternoon soaking up the sun. Talk about a struggle. The things we all do for relaxation 😉 We didn’t stay long with them because the real excitement was still waiting for us.

n4.jpg

I still believe what my dad told me all those years ago about eagles being good luck and today it was proven yet again because after leaving those Sea Lions we got even luckier.

n7.jpg

It is an awe-inspiring moment when you see for the first time an Orca Whale breach so majestically out of the ocean water. We were now coming to the waters where the Strait Georgia and the Strait of Juan de Fuca meet. This is where our first whale greeted us.

n5.jpg
I was happy to see just the one, but what came next I was not expecting. Apparently we came on a good day because there were 3, yes 3 different pods of Orcas in our waters today, both resident whales and transient. In total I think we saw over 20 different Orca whales and one Humpback whale.  We actually spent a fair amount of time following a mom and her offspring, who seemed to be attached to her at the hip. I learned that Orcas are continuously moving, even while there are sleeping so it was fun to follow along as they foraged for their favorite treat, Chinook Salmon.

n6.jpg

Watching them breach and peak out of the water and waiting for them to come back up after their deep dive brings about a sense of simplicity. Like I said before, it is difficult to capture the entire experience because I was really an opportunity of a lifetime. Lucky Friday the Thirteenth I guess. Being out in the open water and watching these beauties in all their glory, really opened my eyes to this impressive ecosystem that is so very close to home.  I no longer see these animals as “Killer Whales”,  who have always been portrayed as violent creatures, but rather a strong, majestic and small part of this marine ecosystem that is put in jeopardy every year. I learned so much from Captain Simon, and I cannot even begin to express how amazingly epic this trip was. They will definitely be seeing my face again at Ocean EcoVentures!! Next time I will remember to bring my camera so I can get some good shots, iPhone just don’t quite cut it. Thankfully Simon got some amazing shots and was able to share them with us 🙂 Oh and maybe some binoculars too for next time 😉

n6.jpg

Thanks Simon, we had a BLAST!

So until then, summer is waiting and more adventures are calling my name.

Bye for now,

Get to Know the Tourism Staff: Helga

Happy Saturday, readers!

Today we are THRILLED to introduce you to our newest Tourism Nanaimo Team member…Helga! Helga has joined us in the role of VIC/Distribution Clerk. She has worked with us for a few years now as a summer student and as well as a part time staff in the off-season. We asked Helga the same questions as all the other staff, so here are her answers!

Meet Helga, our VIC/Distribution Clerk!

In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret?

Not a lot of people know that Nanaimo is home of the International Centre for Sturgeon Studies at VIU and that you can tour the place and have a look at the research facilities and some really cool huge fish. The tours are super interesting and you usually get to touch and hold some baby sturgeons.

What’s one place/event/activity in Nanaimo that you have not yet participated in but would love to one day?

I have to admit that I haven’t fully explored the Cedar and Yellow Point area and I have never been to the Crow and Gate Pub. All these are on my summer bucket list.

Entrance of the Crow & Gate Pub

If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see?

Heading downtown is always a must see. Even if you only have an hour you can stroll the waterfront walkway and along Commercial Street. With a little more time, Newcastle Island is a fun walk and then from there you can hop over to the floating restaurant on Protection Island.

What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo?

I never knew how popular mountain biking is in Nanaimo. It is pretty amazing if you look at a map, how many kilometers of biking trails there actually are.

Mountain biking trails are everywhere!

Thanks Helga – so great to have you on the team. Next time on the Explore Nanaimo Blog, we’ll learn about Laura’s adventures with Stand Up Paddleboarding! Stay tuned!

Get to Know the Tourism Staff: Amanda

Hello Readers! It’s been awhile…have you missed us?

A few months ago we began introducing you to members of our team via a questionnaire on some of their favourite Nanaimo things. We met Kara last time and thought that was our last staff bio…but nope! Amanda Daly has recently joined our team in the role of Visitor Services Specialist!

We asked Amanda the same questions we did for the other staff members…have a look at her answers:

Meet Amanda, our new Visitor Services Specialist

In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret?

Everyone knows we have hiking and walking trails, but the amount of trails in the area will surprise people. Some of my favourites include The Abyss, Upper Colliery Dam, and the trails around Living Forest RV Park & Campground.

What’s one place/event/activity in Nanaimo that you have not yet participated in but would love to one day?

Mount Benson. The one hike that I have not explored. I hope to mark it off my bucket list this summer!

If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see?

Our waterfront. It’s a great place to walk and take in the views. There is always something happening down there and it really is beautiful year-round.

What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo?

I love history so learning more about Nanaimo’s history is very interesting to me, especially the coal mining era. It was such a big industry here at one point and really helped shape Nanaimo. The Nanaimo Museum has a really great exhibit with a replica coal tunnel you can walk through, too!

Thanks Amanda, and welcome to the Tourism team! Well that’s it for now – tune in next time to meet our newest staff member, our Distribution Clerk! If you’ve missed any other staff profiles, you can check them out here 🙂

Get to Know the Tourism Nanaimo Staff: Kara

Happy Monday, readers!

A few months ago we began introducing you to members of our team via a questionnaire on some of their favourite Nanaimo things. Last time we met Chelsea, Tourism Nanaimo’s Destination Marketing Officer. This week we welcome back Kara Walsh who just came back from maternity leave! Not only is Kara back, but she’s starting in a new position as the Destination Development Specialist!

Kara, and her pup Benson, on the summit of Mount Benson!

Kara, and her pup Benson, on the summit of Mount Benson!

In your opinion, what is Nanaimo’s best kept secret?

Mt. Benson. The view is spectacular. The mountain itself is not so much a secret but navigating yourself to the top is definitely a physical challenge. You need to have a good sense of direction and hiking experience.

What’s one place/event/activity in Nanaimo that you have not yet participated in but would love to one day?

Dragon Boating. I have been to the Dragon Boat Festival many times but have never actually paddled in a Dragon Boat. I think it would be a great team building activity and an awesome workout!

If a visitor was only in Nanaimo for one day, what would you recommend they must see?

A few stops on the Nanaimo Bar trail. You can eat yummy treats and explore Nanaimo at the same time!

Click image to see the entire Nanaimo Bar Trail!

What’s the most interesting/surprising thing you’ve learned about Nanaimo since working for Tourism Nanaimo?

I knew Nanaimo had some cool dive sites but I didn’t realize how well known and how popular of a spot we were among the dive community. Vancouver Island has some of the best cold water diving in the world!

Thanks Kara, and welcome back to the Tourism team! Well that’s it – you’ve met our super team. If you missed any other staff profiles, you can check them out here 🙂
