Pickin’ Pumpkins at the Patch (in Nanaimo & Region)

Hey guys – Kara here!

Halloween is just over a week away – have you picked out the perfect pumpkin yet? I have! I took my family with some friends out to McNab’s Farm for a fun little countryside adventure in Yellow Point. We arrived to a beautiful display of pumpkins, squash and other gourds stacked high. They were absolutely beautiful and set the stage for a great photo op.

We first decided to wander over to the animals. My 1.5 year old loved the little piggies as they snorted and snuffed and poked their little snouts through the fence. There were goats, bunnies and chickens for our viewing pleasure too!

We then decided to stroll down to the corn maze to check it out. It was very impressive and is definitely one of the highlights of the farm. We only walked in a few meters with the kids but we saw lots of other folks coming and going who were full of energy and excitement. The corn maze is an impressive 7 acres and for those who are looking for the ultimate Halloween experience there is a night maze open until November 1st.

Next, it was time to hop aboard the hay ride down to the pumpkin patch. Pulled by a tractor we sat in the wagon on hay bales and bumped along the path. It was lots of fun and the kids had a hoot. We each picked out our favorite pumpkin and hauled it back to the tractor to bring us back up to the produce stand to pay for our treasures.

There was very much a community feel to the place with lots of groups sitting around fire pits roasting hotdogs and marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate. There were even a few gentlemen playing their guitars and singing songs!

As we strolled back to our vehicle we said goodbye to some very sweet neighbour horses who were happy to come over for a nose rub.

If you have time you should also check out Yellow Point Cranberries (just across the road from McNabs) to pick up some of their fabulous cranberry products for your festive fall dinners. Til next time!

JoVic pottery has gorgeous quality stoneware, raku art and functional pottery by the master potters Jo and Vic Duffhues. The store is so interesting and houses many gorgeous pieces to look at and choose from. When we were there we were lucky enough to run into some visitors from Seattle. They were on their boats and decided to come ashore to check out JoVic’s pottery. We chatted with them and they chuckled when they realized that we were (in their words, “Ouut and Abooout” today on the Cedar Yellow Point Artisan Trail.

Explore the Cedar Yellow Point Artisan Trail with Sarah & Sean!

Welcome to our first post on the unique and fun Cedar Yellow Point Artisan Trail! Capture

The Cedar Yellow Point Artisan Trail is a self-guided tour that introduces you to local artisans, chefs, farmers, and owners of your homes-away-from-home! In part one of our series we head to Monika’s Quilt & Craft Shop, the Lohmann Gallery & Gift Shop, Yellow Point Cranberries, and the Blanket & Spoon B&B.

Monika’s Quilt & Craft Shop

Nestled along Hummingbird Drive, amongst quaint and homey abodes, lies Monika’s Quilt & Craft Shop. Owned and run by, you guessed it, Monika, this quilt and craft shop houses an array of treasures. Lohmann Gallery & Gift Shop

Next on our stop is Lohmann Gallery & Gift Shop. The first thing you’ll notice as you arrive is the beautifully landscaped property – with colourful flowers, a sprawling yard, and wonderful shade trees. Steer down the gravel driveway until you reach the gallery:

Here you’ll find “original paintings in an original style”. These works of art must be seen in person to fully experience! While perusing the gallery don’t be surprised if Monty, the Lohmann family dog, comes in for a quick hello!

In addition to her colorful, and mesmerizing, paintings Claudia also creates “up-cycled” pieces – which she describes as thrift store finds made into practical art, worthy of any home. Claudia herself has a few such items in her own home including an old, large wooden table that used to sit in her family’s dining room. The result is an intricately painted work of art. In addition to paintings and up-cycled pieces, the Lohmann Gallery also sells an array of nick knacks!

Yellow Point Cranberries

Self-described as a “bog to bottle family-run cranberry farm”, Yellow Point Cranberries is a must-stop for any cranberry fanatic. Tour the farm as owner Grant explains the cycle of the cranberry from soil to harvest.

As he speaks, you’ll get a real sense of the pride and love he has for his work. After touring the grounds, head up to the farm’s shop where they sell everything cranberry-related under the sun!

From marmalades to jellies, liqueur mix to cookie mix, there is plenty to choose from to satisfy your cranberry-tooth! For an extra special experience, make sure you visit in the fall when the farm hosts their annual Cranberry Harvest. Here, you’ll be able to experience what’s know as “wet harvesting” – dry bogs are flooded with water as a machine called a water reel releases the cranberries from their vines. The result is a sea of floating cranberries – an event not to be missed!

So you’ve spent hours, maybe even a full day, reaching your final destination – the Blanket & Spoon. As you walk along the stone path, set along a beautifully landscaped garden, you’ll marvel at the serene and picturesque setting of your home-away-from-home.

Once inside, Shane and Carol are there to graciously welcome you in.
